March is National Women’s Month in the Philippines, a special occasion celebrated in honor of International Women’s Day. During this month-long event, we recognize the achievements made by notable Filipinas and women worldwide, as well as the steps they have taken to promote change and raise awareness for issues that truly matter.

In recent years, social media has become a platform for many of these empowered ladies to spread their advocacies. Through this, they have found a way to get their messages across to a wider range of people. Social media has also allowed them to build and nurture online communities that uplift and provide support for other women all around the globe.

Indeed, there is no limit to what an empowered woman is capable of doing. This Women’s Month, in honor of all the strong, inspirational females we look up to, we’ve rounded up some of the best videos from empowered women on TikTok. Check them out to see the many qualities that make these women absolutely amazing.

Confidence is power
One common trait possessed by every powerful woman is confidence. Having a strong sense of self, and faith in their own abilities enables these women to rise up and pursue their dreams. Two stellar examples of women of confidence are Zozibini Tunzi and Catriona Grey, who have both worn the crown of Miss Universe.

Being beautiful inside and out, their self-assurance shines through as a perfect complement to their physical beauty. These women are queens in their own right, who have used their time in the spotlight to break boundaries, and advocate for equality, inclusion, and women’s rights.

An empowered woman embraces her quirks
There is beauty in imperfection, and a woman who is able to embrace her quirks can definitely be considered empowered. A positive attitude like this can uplift others, and inspire them to accept and love themselves as they are.

Local celebrities like Jodi Sta. Maria, Bela Padilla and Isabelle Daza are not afraid to show their quirky self online, making them more relatable and endearing to their followers. Their videos on TikTok show that these women have the ability to not take things too seriously, and remember to enjoy life amidst any challenges they might face.

A talented woman is an empowered one
When people use their talents for good, they are able to make an impact on others, touch lives, and even drive positive change. We see this clearly in actors, musicians, athletes, and personalities who have gained global recognition in what they do, and are considered to be role models. These empowered individuals help shape the future by inspiring the youth to aim high and reach for the stars.

Two examples of empowered and talented individuals are artists, Donnalyn Bartolome and Alicia Keys. Their music has made waves in the local scene and abroad, and both women are true icons who bring joy to their fans.

Dance challenges on TikTok has proven once again that it has the power to go viral--- or fight a virus in this case. Users of the platform in Vietnam are spreading awareness on the prevention of COVID-19 with the hashtag challenges #handwashingmove and #ghencovychallenge. As of writing, the challenge already has 18.1M views and 2.4M views respectively.

<blockquote class="tiktok-embed" cite="https://www.tiktok.com/@im.quangdang/video/6795172608770870529" data-video-id="6795172608770870529" style="max-width: 605px;min-width: 325px;" > <section> <a target="_blank" title="@im.quangdang" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@im.quangdang">@im.quangdang</a> <p>Cùng nâng cao và bảo vệ sức khỏe bằng cách lan tỏa <a title="vudieuruatay" target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/vudieuruatay">##vudieuruatay</a>  Bạn sẵn sàng tham gia cùng Đăng chứ? 😉 <a title="quangdang" target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/quangdang">##quangdang</a> <a title="tiktokvietnam" target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/tag/tiktokvietnam">##tiktokvietnam</a></p> <a target="_blank" title="♬ Ghen Cô Vy (Vũ Điệu Rửa Tay) - Khắc Hưng, MIN, ERIK" href="https://www.tiktok.com/music/Ghen-Cô-Vy-Vũ-Điệu-Rửa-Tay-6795143325574761217">♬ Ghen Cô Vy (Vũ Điệu Rửa Tay) - Khắc Hưng, MIN, ERIK</a> </section> </blockquote> <script async src="https://www.tiktok.com/embed.js"></script>

One of Vietnam’s popular dancers, Quang Dang, choreographed the #handwashingmove
with six handwashing moves based on the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO) to prevent the spread of diseases.

The dance easily gained popularity with the help of the catchy song “Ghen Co Vy” (a song under communication project by Vietnam’s Ministry of Health) which literally translated as “Jealous Coronavirus”. The virus will surely be jealous as the dance even earned the approval of host and comedian John Oliver on his show Last Week Tonight.

"It absolutely slaps! That's a genuine club-banger right there!,” commented Oliver.

#handwashingmove and #ghencovychallenge mark another #TikTokforGood effort to spread useful and correct information to the community. Not only an act to raise awareness about healthcare habits, the challenges also deliver TikTok’s optimistic spirit in the fight against COVID-19 epidemic. The platform will be present as a worldwide trustworthy, helpful yet joyful information channel for the public during this serious period.

“Simple knowledge of disease prevention such as keeping warm, wearing medical masks or washing hands properly are basic practices that everyone needs to acquire. With the advantage in technology and the diverse in background music, TikTok will contribute in equipping users with these useful information and skills, encouraging each person to protect their health, as well as their family and the community”, said Mr. Nguyen Lam Thanh - Head of Public Policy, TikTok Vietnam.

“I believe that dancing to lively music is the best way to remember properly healthcare knowledge, such as 6 steps of washing hands. I hope #handwashingmove, along with many other healthcare tips delivered through short videos in this campaign will be helpful and cheerful for all users”, said dancer Quang Dang.

Travel and Philippine tourism gained the spotlight as Pinoy TikTok content creators kick-started the latest dance challenge, #GoCreatePH, which was launched by the Department of Tourism (DOT) last February 24, 2020.

The beauty of Cebu and Bohol was captured through uniquely created TikTok videos from the perspectives of: Chierald Tan, Michael Joseph Uy, Simon Joseph Javier, Pamela Evangelista, Sairalen Brual, Lennie Enverga, Alyssa Profeta, Alicia Rigonan, Shaine Buhat, Chairein Kris Cordoviz, Kimberly Dianne Vinson Ilag, Pamela Reyes, Nelson Morato, Duke De Castro, Ian Carl De Jesus, Cedric Rosal, Carla Zara, and Amber Miles.

“TikTok supports the Department of Tourism in its unrelenting efforts to boost the local tourism. Our creators are happy to lend their talents and be part of this campaign to kickstart the #GoCreatePH challenge. We are looking forward to hundreds, if not thousands, of creative executions and show users around the globe that the Philippines is a fun place to be --- from our majestic mountains and shores to the genius and creativity of Filipinos,” said TikTok Philippines Operations and Community Manager John Castro.

DOT is the first Philippine government agency to partner with TikTok and utilize the platform to boost tourism in the country. The partnership, forged in December 2019,  is a perfect marriage of each party’s campaign: TikTok’s ongoing global campaign #TikTokTravel which aims to capture feel-good and meaningful travel moments; and DOT’s umbrella campaign “It’s More Fun in the Philippines” which aims to showcase the best of the Philippines.

“The DOT is always looking for new, fresh, and definitely fun ways to tell everyone that ‘It’s More Fun in the Philippines’,” said DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat. “We can’t wait to see all the different creative and entertaining ways our fellow Filipinos shine the spotlight on our beautiful country.”
