The world has arrived in the era of artificial intelligence. Most smartphones, if not all, are equipped with AI features to enhance the user experience. But global smartphone brand Vivo is making the most of this technology in its newest flagship.

The Vivo X21 is powered by AI technology to enhance the experience of every user.

One of the most basic uses of AI technology in mobile devices is through photography. The Vivo brand has been well-known for the way it revolutionized the selfie game.

In Vivo X21, the brand augmented how users take selfies with the AI Face Beauty and the AI Selfie Lighting.

Vivo’s AI Face Beauty feature can identify the subject’s sex, skin tone, and surrounding lighting environment to create the ideal settings, which are eventually based on the user’s habits and preferences.

But what really makes it stand out is that this feature collected almost a million facial images from people all over the world to create an AI database so its algorithms can accurately detect the age, gender, and skin tone of users in different countries. This provides each user with the most appropriate beauty effects also based on specific market habits and culture.

TechPinas’ Mark Milan Macanas, in fact, affirmed that the feature renders a more natural result.

“With this technology from Vivo, your selfies will be beautified, but at the same time, you still look like your selfies,” he said at the launch of the Vivo X21 on June 21.

To give more impact to the selfies, Vivo X21 also has AI Selfie Lighting that processes light accents authentically. It does by identifying the different parts of the face so the X21 can fill light, adjust sharpness, enhance shadows, and apply filters. The user can choose among a range of light accent effects like Studio Light, Stereo Light, and Monochrome Background to enhance that perfect shot.

The Vivo X21 adjusts the lighting of a photo through AI technology

Aside from its selfie capabilities, the front camera also has a new infrared module to help user to recognize faces even in dark situations. Now enhanced by AI, Vivo X21’s AI Face Access can intelligently detect ambient light intensity and ensure fast and accurate unlocking at night.

Vivo X21’s AI Photography, moreover, is improved with the AI HDR and the AI Scene Recognition.

With just a single press of the shutter, Vivo X21’s AI HDR captures more frames of a wider dynamic range than previously possible with existing HDR technology. This provides more image options for merging to perfectly light all the parts of the eventual photo to render crisper results.

The AI Scene Recognition, meanwhile, goes beyond the night, sports, vibration or backlit scenarios. It can also detect and identify 18 tags and 140 scenarios such as portraits, food, and plants. It is activated using Vivo’s AI algorithm based on a large database of almost one million photos. Through this database, the Vivo X21 can detect different scenarios and adjust settings such as saturation, sharpness, and brightness.

No more cluttered photo albums with Vivo X21’s AI Scene Recognition

Also during the launch of the Vivo X21 on June 21, GadgetMatch’s Daniel Moral praised this AI feature in helping a user sort out the photos taken.

“Vivo X21 has more scene detections than any other phones in the market… There is an album dedicated called AI Image Identification, so you go there then it sorts out by selfies, by documents, by food, and by people,” he said.

Vivo’s newest flagship also uses AI technology to enhance its processor. Named AI Smart Engine, the Vivo X21 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 Artificial Intelligence Engine (AIE) which can effectively utilize CPU resources for complex AI processes.

In fact, according to GizGuide’s Peter Jan Icogo, the Vivo X21’s chipset is the smartphone brand’s most powerful processor in the Philippines to date.

“What I like about the Vivo X21 with the help of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 is its battery efficiency... Its battery life can last for around 1.5 days in a single charge. That is very impressive,” he said during the Vivo X21 launch.

The AI Smart Engine, moreover, also familiarizes itself with user preferences and predicts different usage scenarios to launch and switch apps faster for a seamless user experience.

The AI Smart Engine is further amplified by the AI Game Mode. The Vivo X21 knows it when you play games and transforms into a dedicated game console with features to help eliminate distraction. For instance, the Background Calls feature means you can stay on calls without stopping the game, and AI Game Mode prevents accidental touch operations, ensuring you only make the moves you intended.

With all these AI-powered capabilities, Vivo X21 proves that its priority is making smartphone experience a pleasure to every user.

The Vivo X21 is available for only Php29,999. It is retailed at authorized shops nationwide. The list of participating stores can be found on this link: http://vivoglobal.ph/x21_stores/

At a touch of a finger, the all-new Vivo X21 unlocks a world of endless possibilities with its revolutionary In-Display Fingerprint Scanner.

The technology, which was introduced in the Philippines last June 21, replaced the rear fingerprint sensor not only to achieve a sleek and unified design but also to offer an immersive smartphone experience.

So how does this the fingerprint scanner work? It all boils down to science and meticulous research.

When the user's finger touches the screen for unlocking, the Vivo X21’s Super AMOLED display emits light to illuminate the finger. The optical fingerprint sensor below the OLED display captures the light reflected by the fingerprint. Based on the reflected light from the unique ridges on the fingerprint, the sensor processes the optical signals to deliver crisp and sharp fingerprint images for matching.

Moreover, when fingerprint recognition is needed, such as when the screen is off and for unlocking apps, a fingerprint recognition icon will appear on the screen for users to press for immediate authentication. Otherwise, the fingerprint icon is invisible to ensure a seamless mobile experience.

The current unlocking speed is only 0.6 second.

The decision to mass produce the In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology was made after an extensive research into different biometric solutions in the market as well as consumer habits and market needs.  To recall, Vivo has various research and development centers worldwide, including the United States (San Diego) and China (Shenzhen, Dongguan, Nanjing, Hangzhou, and Beijing).

Perfecting the In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology was no easy feat as it was a huge challenge to integrate the sensor to the Vivo X21’s internal design and screen. Vivo had to redesign the internal structure of the phone to make this vision come to life.

At MWC Shanghai 2017, Vivo unveiled the industry’s first Vivo Under-Display Fingerprint Scanning Solution. Then at CES 2018, the global smartphone brand displayed a ready-to-produce smartphone with the world’s first In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology.

Topnotch global smartphone brand Vivo has officially brought the world-first in-display fingerprint technology in smartphone to the Philippines at the launch of the Vivo X21 last June 21 in Manila. The event, graced by the brand’s hottest influencers and well-attended by industry partners and member of the media, featured football fever as Vivo is the official smartphone sponsor of the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018.

The event showcased official FIFA merchandize with adorable Vivo mascots showing the crowd how to do the #PassTheSwag dance in a brief but fun dance presentation.

Vivo’s local brand endorsers were also seen donning FIFA football jerseys of various teams: blogger-sisters Vern and Vernice Enciso were sporting jerseys of team Germany and team Spain, both victors of FIFA World Cup 2014 and 2010 respectively.

Meanwhile, Chienna Filomeno and Maris Racal were proudly wearing the jerseys of Brazil, the five-time FIFA World Cup title holders.

Soulful acoustic star TJ Monterde, on the other hand, showed expressed support for Portugal’s football superstar Christiano Ronaldo.

Even the Vivo team composed of Ms. Hazel Bascon, VP for Sales, Ms. Annie Lim, Brand Director, Mr. Patrick Villareal, and Ms. Jomarie Morales were also bitten by the FIFA fever with their football-inspired garb.

The brand endorsers were more than thrilled to be a part of the Vivo X21 launch. Verniece and Vern, author of a popular travel and fashion blog, attributes their beautiful page content to the Vivo X21, “Part of our job is taking photos and capturing memories all over the world. Vivo X21 is our new travel buddy. What we super love about the new smartphone is the dual rear camera.” The sisters also love the X21’s AI Super HDR feature that offers crisp photos for posting online.

Chienna, a K-pop fanatic, appreciates the X21’s FullView Display, “Because I really love watching dance covers, music videos, [the X21’s FullView Display] allows me to see the videos clearly especially when I rehearse K-Pop dance moves.”

Singer TJ, who is also a gamer on the side, is impressed with the X21’s Game Mode. “It allows me to block alerts while I’m playing games so I can focus on winning Mobile Legends,” TJ gushes.

“But, it also allows me to modify the settings so I can still accept calls especially from my girlfriend.”

TJ is referring to long-time love and fellow Vivo endorser KZ Tandingan.

Vivo is known to push boundaries in the name of innovation. The Vivo X21 is proof of this with its impressive under-glass fingerprint sensor complemented by other state-of-the-art offerings such as an impressive 19:9 Fullview Display which produces a more immersive mobile video-watching and gaming experience, and an AI Face Beauty-enabled camera that boasts of dual pixel sensors which creates vivid pictures whether in low-light or backlight situations—perfect for everyone’s travel shots.

The new Vivo smartphone is also equipped with Vivo’s latest pride: the AI-powered Super HDR technology. Committed to bringing flawless photos, the Super HDR is an upgrade of the regular HDR but merges more frames to resolve the problems presented by contrasting strong dark and light tones in a photo so one can take shots anytime, anywhere.
